Negotiation Process in Employee Relations


What is Negotiation ?
Negotiation is a form of decision-making where two or more parties approach a problem or situation wanting to achieve their own objectives - which may or may not turn out to be the same. In the employee relations arena, negotiation usually takes place within the collective bargaining environment.

It is involves discussion between two or multiple parties with the aim of ending differences and reaching an understanding. Each party tries to further their interests and also tries to attain a compromise. It is also called principled or interest based negotiation.(Shonk, 2019 )


There are five steps to the negotiation process, which are:


1.Preparation and planning.

2.Definition of ground rules.

3.Clarification and justification.

4.Bargaining and problem solving.

5.Closure and implementation.



Negotiation Skills ?



Negotiation skills are skills that help an individual negotiate effectively or reach to an agreement in conflicting situations.


The various negotiation skills are –


Analyzing a problem – Effective negotiators must have the skill to analyze a problem taking into account the interest of each party. Identifying the problems of both sides can help finding a solution.

Getting ready – Before entering a situation that requires negotiating, a skilled negotiator plan for it beforehand.

Give attention – Negotiators have the skill to listen attentively to the other party during the discussion. 


Controlling emotions – It is extremely important for a negotiator to keep his emotions in control during a negotiation, otherwise it can lead to emotional outbursts and jeopardize relations.


Effective communication – Negotiators must have the ability to communicate clearly during the negotiation or else it can lead to misunderstandings. A skilled negotiator must be able to state his reasoning and the desired outcome.


Importance of negotiation skills-


Negotiation skills importance is present in every sphere of life, but these skills play a more important role in business and organizational settings as compared to our daily lives. The ability to negotiate effectively is highly appreciated in today’s competitive market. Business suffers a great loss due to poor negotiation skills while they can increase their profitability with better negotiation skills. (Shrm.org, 2017)

Why is negotiation important?

Strong negotiation skills can be the difference between a beneficial compromise and a loss. There will always be conflicts in life, and the ability to solve them, particularly in the business world. That’s why negotiation is important in business, it is what creates success.

  3. This is just acting. In reality, your boss will say unfortunately, we cannot do that before you can even continue. Working from home seems to be only for a few, such as CEO, CFO, Director or Executives. Ordinary employees, well a few days for a year is possible, but don't expect much.
