Performance Management in the Workplace

What is Performance Management in the Organization ?

Performance management is not an annual appraisal meeting. It is not preparing for that appraisal meeting nor is it a self-evaluation. It's not a form nor is it a measuring tool although many organizations may use tools and forms to track goals and improvements, they are not the process of performance management.

Performance management is the process of creating a work environment or setting in which people are enabled to perform to the best of their abilities.

Performance management is a whole work system that begins when a job is defined as needed. It ends when an employee leaves your organization.

Performance management defines your interaction with an employee at every step of the way in between these major life cycle occurrences. Performance management makes every interaction opportunity with an employee into a learning occasion. (Just HR.Usha, 2012)

What are the five Elements of Performance Management Success ?

The performance management success can only be achieved if you have the following five key elements in place -

1. Planning and Expectation Setting.

2. Monitoring.

3. Development and Improvement.

4. Periodic Rating.

5. Rewards and Compensation.

What is the importance of performance management in the work place ?

Performance management allows you to tap the full potential of your staff. In short, it can be described as a comprehensive process starting from monitoring and developing the desired traits to rating their progress and rewarding them for their achievements.

*Involve Employees in the Planning Stage-
The making of plans alone will not help you to run your business successfully. You must also focus on the appropriate ways to get business tasks done.

*Monitoring the Progress of Your Employees-
Just as revision of business plans is sometimes necessary for the success of your business, measuring the performance of every employee is also important.

*Ensuring All Around Development of Employees-
Performance management gives you the tools to instill the desired qualities in your employees in order to get the job done.

*Evaluation of Individual Performance-
Evaluating and rating the performance of your employees on an individual basis is essential.

*Rewarding Your Employees-

Rewarding and appreciating your employees’ efforts ensures that their level of their performance and consequently the performance of your business is not compromised. It ensures optimum productivity, performance and maximum profitability.(R. Khera, 2007)
