Employee Engagement in the Workplace

What is the Employee Engagement ?

Robinson (2004) define employee engagement as “a positive attitude held by the employee towards the organization and its value. An engaged employee is aware of business context, and works with colleagues to improve performance within the job for the benefit of the organization. The organization must work to develop and nurture engagement, which requires a two-way relationship between employer and employee.”

What are the methods to increase Employee Engagement in the Workplace ?
  • Encourage flexibility -
This gives your employees the freedom to adjust their work schedules or location to better suit their needs.
  • Volunteer as a team -Employers should support charitable organisation and get involved with the community. Encourage your employees to take part in volunteer projects as a team.
  • Always be authentic -Always remember that a sincere relationship between employees and the management motivates trust and builds teamwork.
  • Promote taking breaks -You can also encourage and remind to your employees to take a short 5 minutes break from their desk and stretch.
  • Asking for feedback - Employers are often the one giving feedback to employees, about their working styles, office environment, workload and others.it makes them feel that their opinion matters and it plays an important part in the company.
  • Hold regular social gatherings -Weekly gathering with colleagues and peers are a great way to get to know each other on a personal level.
  • Promote honesty - is the only policy in building a successful business. The last aspect in nailing employee engagement is having honest communication among your team. (Clarke, 2019)

Why Employee Engagement Is Important for Any Business ?
A satisfied employee is happy with their job, but an engaged employee feels invested in the organization, is motivated to perform at their best, and goes above and beyond to contribute to the organization’s goals.
  • Organizations with Engaged Employees Have Better Financial Health -We know high employee engagement is correlated with higher average revenue growth, net profit margin, customer satisfaction, and earnings per share. Engaged employees feel a sense or purpose and ownership that drive them to be efficient and creative.

  • Engaged Employees Are More Productive -High-performing companies strive for high employee engagement because they understand that engaged employees often identify the best solutions to address sticky business challenges and customer needs, in turn driving organizational success.
  • Organizations with engaged employees have higher employee retention -Organizations with high employee engagement are often letting their employees do what they do best. If your high-performing employees don’t feel challenged, or don’t see growth opportunities internally, they may look for other employment that will.
  •  Employee Engagement means fewer safety incidents -Employees who are not focused on their work or not committed to doing it the right way can be a contributing factor to more work-related injuries and safety incidents.
