Ethical Management in the Workplace

Human resource management deals with manpower planning and development related activities in an organization. Arguably it is that branch of management where ethics really matter, since it concerns human issues specially those of compensation, development, industrial relations and health and safety issues.Promoting ethics in the workplace creates a positive culture for managers and employees, as well as a successful business.

Businesses with strong workplace ethics add value to the organization and support an environment where employees feel safe and valued. Leaders can help create an ethical workplace culture that benefits shareholders, the organization and people in the company.

The Key Factors  for Managing Ethics in the Workplace-

1. Recognize that managing ethics is a process.
2.  The bottom line of an ethics program is accomplishing preferred behaviors in the workplace.
3.  The best way to handle ethical dilemmas is to avoid their occurrence in the first place.
4. Make ethics decisions in groups, and make decisions public, as appropriate.
5. Integrate ethics management with other management practices.
6. Use cross-functional teams when developing and implementing the ethics management program.
7. Value forgiveness.
8. Note that trying to operate ethically and making a few mistakes is better than not trying at all.(McNamara, 2010)

How to Manage Ethics in the Workplace ?

Communicate the company's ethics policy clearly to the employees.  Ask people to talk about examples of different ethical decisions. Review the rules and the reasons for them.

Employees may not always be sure what the ethical solution is. Therefore, it's the company's responsibility to provide the resources that they need to make the right decision.

Create an atmosphere in which employees can trust their supervisors and know they can report violators of the ethics policy.

Supervisors cannot expect employees to respect them if they don't follow the rules that they set. Model decision-making that embraces the ethical values that the company embraces.(Bizfluent, 2017)

How to Improve Ethics in the Workplace ?

Ethics in the workplace can improve a company in a variety of ways, both internally and externally. If employees in a company make an agreement to treat each other more ethically, such as by refraining from certain kinds of office politics.  more ethical employees can often lead to a better public reputation for a company, a reputation that can lead to increased customer loyalty.

Outline the rules of ethical conduct.  For an employee to know he's behaving unethically, he has to first be apprised of what constitutes ethical conduct.

Install a reward system. ethical conduct should be its own reward.Employees should want to act ethically because it's the right thing to do and instills in them a sense of self-worth.

Institute training. Many office managers mandate training seminars in which employees attempt to develop ethical behavior by listening to speakers and participating in activities designed to make them more aware of ethical aspects of their job.

Bring in an outside ethical advisory group.  Many consultancies offer ethics-based training. Consider bringing one to make suggestions about increasing ethics in your workplace.(Wolfe,2017)
